Featured Stories

The Wall Street Journal featured research by Richard Easterlin of the USC Dornsife College and colleagues, finding that economic growth in China hasn't led to greater life satisfaction for the majority of citizens. The study was also covered by La Repubblica (Italy), Magyar Tavirati Iroda (Hungary) and Voice of America.

L.A. Weekly featured several USC people in its People 2012 issue, which highlights prominent Angelenos. The list includes USC Dean of Religious Life Varun Soni, the first Hindu in American history to serve as a dean of religious life. "We have more student religious groups and campus religious directors than any university in the country," Soni said, adding that the mix of faiths at USC offers learning opportunities. L.A. Weekly also featured USC student Matt Barkley, who opted not to be drafted to the NFL in order to stay on as quarterback of the USC football team and complete his senior year. Barkley said he "wouldn't give back this experience for anything." L.A. Weekly also highlighted Theater Without Taboos, which produces Spanish-language plays in the West Adams area near USC. USC President Emeritus Steven B. Sample facilitated the founding of the theater as a neighborhood outreach program, and the university remains a major benefactor.

NBC News Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV ran an op-ed by Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of the USC Price School about the role of same-sex marriage in Californian elections. "A candidate running in the open primary — against not only opponents from other parties and independents, but against members of his or her own party — may try to use it as a means to differentiate from others in the race," Jeffe wrote.

La Opinion highlighted the USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI), which helps to prepare students in the communities around USC for college. Lizette Zarate, NAI curriculum and instruction specialist, was quoted about new requirements within the Los Angeles Unified School District.
