USC in the News 9/20/2012

Los Angeles Times featured The Village at USC, noting that a Los Angeles City Council meeting on the project has been delayed. The project would bring 350,000 square feet of retail — including a new grocery, restaurants and shops — and up to 5,400 student beds. Jim Baiseri, a longtime resident of the community, told the planning committee that the project would bring many benefits to the area. “USC is a strong economic engine in L.A., and we need to do everything we can to support them,” he said. Fox News Los Angeles affiliate KTTV-TV reported that the project would create 12,000 jobs for the region, 8,000 of them permanent. David Galaviz, USC executive director of local government relations, told ABC News Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV that “the goal is to create a community and student-serving center where we’d have USC students live, but we’d also have community members who could shop, dine and work.” The story was also covered by Univision Los Angeles affiliate KMEX-DT.

The Independent (U.K.) highlighted a new international business degree uniting the USC Marshall School, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Bocconi University in Milan. In the World Bachelor in Business program, students will study at all three universities over the course of three years, and then choose one of the schools at which to do their final year. The program was also covered by Corriere della Sera (Italy), Avvenire (Italy) and Business Journals.

The New York Times featured Tracy Grikscheit of the Keck School of USC, reporting that she is at the forefront of research efforts to develop replacement organs and tissues. Grikscheit, a surgeon at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, hopes her work will help children and infants with intestinal problems.

Campus Technology featured an initiative by Jane Chang Bright of the USC Gould School to preserve academic integrity in an age when computers are allowed in testing rooms. When laptops became prevalent, the USC Gould School started using SofTest, software that prevents students from getting notes off the Internet or opening PDFs and records every keystroke during a test. It’s the same software used by the State Bar of California. “I personally feel [that] a law school is doing their students and future grads a huge disservice by not using SofTest,” Chang Bright said.

The Record highlighted an immigrant integration scorecard created by USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration. “California has always been about the future,” said Manuel Pastor of the USC Dornsife College. “Our economy is one of the biggest in the world and ... immigrants have fueled our growth since the state’s earliest days.” The scorecard rated different counties in California using metrics like economic advancement, school performance and how welcoming the region was. “San Joaquin, like Fresno, embodies the realities and complexities of immigrant integration in rural California,” said Vanessa Carter of the USC Dornsife College.

Fox News Radio Laramie, Wyo., affiliate KOWB-AM highlighted research by the Southern California Earthquake Center at USC, which is conducting a “cyber shake” with the help of University of Wyoming scholar Po Chen. The center will provide data on California to be fed into a supercomputer, which will identify areas with high-seismic hazards. The research can help communities strengthen their building codes, the story stated.
