USC in the News 10/4/2012
C-SPAN covered the inaugural symposium of the USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy. The symposium included a panel on moving past partisanship, which included Sen. John McCain, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, and former Governors Bill Richardson, Charlie Crist and Tom Ridge. “We all breathe the same air,” said USC President C. L. Max Nikias. “I learned the old way of doing things just didn’t work — so I broke the rules,” Schwarzenegger said. The coverage included addresses by Bonnie Reis of the USC Price School, global director of the institute, and Nancy Staudt of the USC Gould School, academic director of the institute. CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” interviewed Schwarzenegger about the institute.
The Wall Street Journal ran a Q&A with Keith Vaughn, assistant dean of MBA admissions at the USC Marshall School, and other university admissions experts, on what business schools look for in MBA applicants. “Admissions is connected to career services,” Vaughn said. “A lot of our conversations are, ‘What is it that you’re intending to do?’; ‘How have you prepared to do that?’; ‘How prepared are you to look off-campus versus on-campus?’”
The Wall Street Journal cited the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Poll finding that Proposition 32, which would limit political spending by unions and corporations, is trailing by eight points. KPCC-FM cited the poll, noting that support for Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax initiative slipped to 54 percent.
International Business Times reported that USC graduate student Shili Xu, Nouri Neamati of the USC School of Pharmacy, Nicos Petasis of the USC Dornsife College, and USC graduate student Alexey Butkevich have found a new drug for ovarian cancer. The drug decreases the number of doses a patient needs and is effective for patients whose cancer has become drug-resistant. “We are exploring combination studies in order to find synergy between our drug and first-line therapy for ovarian cancer,” Neamati said. “When the patient has no other choice, we could potentially treat them with our drug.” The research was also covered by RedOrbit.
Radio New Zealand (New Zealand) featured research by Yong-Gang Li of the USC Dornsife College and colleagues on the 7.1 Christchurch earthquake. Li and colleagues found that two faults are connected underground; if they had ruptured, it would have caused a 7.3 quake under the city of Christchurch. “Our interpretation is that between the two faults there is a connection at depth — seismic depth somewhere below three kilometers — [showing] the faults are moderately connected,” Li said. Stuff (New Zealand) also featured the work.
Time featured a retrospective for late sculptor Ken Price, who was professor emeritus at the USC Roski School. The story noted that Frank Gehry of the USC School of Architecture designed the exhibition, which is now running at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
NBC News Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV featured a presidential debate viewing party at the USC Annenberg School, organized by the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC. Dan Schnur of the USC Dornsife College said it was the most well attended debate viewing party in USC history. Several USC students were interviewed about the debate. Associated Press and CBS News Los Angeles affiliate KCBS-TV also covered the viewing party.
CBS News’ “MoneyWatch” ran a column by Dave Logan of the USC Marshall School about the mindset of great leaders. “When leaders become empiricists, they are guided by all available evidence, letting that data tell them the right thing to do,” Logan wrote. “When they reach the edge of the cliff of what is known, they jump off, creating visions or futures of what can be.”
The Chronicle Herald (Canada) quoted Scott Altman of the USC Gould School about federal and state child support amounts.
Bloomberg Businessweek quoted Dan Schnur of the USC Dornsife College about the effect of presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s debate performance on his campaign.
KPCC-FM’s “Take Two” interviewed Niels Frenzen of the USC Gould School about laws signed and vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown that affect undocumented immigrants.
CBS News Los Angeles affiliate KCAL-TV interviewed Susan Estrich of the USC Gould School about the presidential debate.
ABC News Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV interviewed Dan Schnur of the USC Dornsife College about what voters will learn from the presidential debates.
CW News Los Angeles affiliate KTLA-TV interviewed Thomas Hollihan of the USC Annenberg School about the presidential candidates’ strategic goals during the first debate.
La Opinion quoted Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of the USC Price School about presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s appeals to Latino voters. A second La Opinion story quoted Jeffe.
The New York Times cited research by Richard Easterlin of the USC Dornsife College finding that the life satisfaction of China’s urban population doesn’t match the country’s rapid economic growth over the last 20 years.
Associated Press mentioned that USC Trustee and alumnus David Dornsife and wife Dana Dornsife gave a $200 million naming gift last year to the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
NBC News Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV ran a column by Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of the USC Price School about Gov. Jerry Brown’s motivations regarding the bills he signs or vetoes.
