USC in the News 11/14/2012
Los Angeles Times ran an obituary for USC alumna and Democratic Party leader Carmen Warschaw, who endowed a chair at USC in 2003. Warschaw and her late husband, USC alumnus Louis Warschaw, helped create the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC in 1989 and established a lecture series that brings Jewish elected officials to speak at USC. NBC News Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV ran an obituary for Warschaw written by Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of the USC Price School.
India-West featured Sajjad Yacoob of the Keck School of USC, who was recently awarded the Provost’s Prize for Teaching With Technology at the sixth annual Teaching With Technology conference, held at USC. Since 1997, Yacoob has collected material for a multimedia archive of images, video and audio clips; this archive has been used to train more than 3,000 Keck School students.
EFE (Spain) featured research by Mark Latonero and Geoffrey Cowan of the USC Annenberg School and colleagues, finding that Latinos and African-Americans are more likely to be victims of sex trafficking through the increased used of social media and mobile technology. Latonero said that this technology is much more widespread than initially thought, expanding through multiple sites and digital platforms.
Firstpost (India) noted that USC has the most international students of any U.S. university, according to a new report from the Institute of International Education. L.A. Weekly also ran a story.
USA Today quoted David Carter of the USC Marshall School about driver Danica Patrick’s NASCAR career.
Los Angeles Times quoted Sheila Sofian of the USC School of Cinematic Arts about independent animated films.
CNN interviewed Mike Chinoy of the USC U.S.-China Institute about Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is expected to replace Hu Jintao as party chief tomorrow.
L.A. Weekly quoted Patrick James of the USC Dornsife College about Mitt Romney’s strategy during the 2012 presidential campaign, and cited USC’s Election 2012 Web site.
The Christian Science Monitor quoted John Matsusaka of USC’s Initiative and Referendum Institute about voter behavior regarding ballot measures.
KCET-TV interviewed Richard Green of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate about the housing market.
The Washington Post stated that USC President C. L. Max Nikias has expressed reservations about the academic rigor of massive open online courses.
ABC News Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV highlighted “Fit for Society,” a performance held as part of Visions and Voices: The USC Arts & Humanities Initiative.
Los Angeles Times reported on a lawsuit filed against USC by the families of two students. The story was also covered by Associated Press, City News Service, ABC News Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV and CBS News Los Angeles affiliate KCBS-TV.
Associated Press cited USC’s Initiative and Referendum Institute regarding the number of ballot measures up for vote on Election Day. The institute was cited by another Associated Press story, Daily Mail (U.K.), Al Jazeera, CBS News and Forbes.
Los Angeles Times ran a story about KUSC-FM’s listenership.
Variety cited a study by Stacy Smith of the USC Annenberg School finding that TV and movies have a female presence of only 17 percent.
