CNN ran an op-ed by Ron Avi Astor of the USC School of Social Work about the Newtown, Conn. shooting and how it could affect the debate over gun control. Astor wrote that schools need to look at weapons students are already bringing on to campus. "As important as changing their attitudes toward weapons on campus is providing students with anonymous ways to let authorities know about a potential threat," Astor wrote.
The Huffington Post ran a column by Kathleen Reardon of the USC Marshall School about author Michael Keith's latest anthology of stories, "Sad Boy." "I read his stories as one drinks a fine cognac -- over time," Reardon wrote.
Science Codex covered research by Derick Han of the Keck School of USC and colleagues on how liver mitochondria react to alcohol. Understanding the relationship could help pinpoint targets for therapy. "We've found that mitochondrial plasticity — the mitochondria's ability to change — is probably central to the liver's response to alcohol intake. This gives us a better understanding of how the liver works and how it adapts to stress," Han said. The story was also covered by Science Daily.
The Wall Street Journal cited George Lefcoe of the USC Gould School about how gifts can encourage corruption.
The Wall Street Journal quoted Lawrence Harris of the USC Marshall School about a merger between NYSE Euronext and IntercontinentalExchange Inc. Harris was also quoted by The Washington Post.
KCET-TV interviewed Stephen O'Leary of the USC Annenberg School about the Mayan apocalypse.
Business News Daily cited a survey by the Center for the Digital Future at the USC Annenberg School finding a quarter of computer owners will not replace their desktop or laptop PCs when their machines become unusable.
