USC in the News 1/3/2013
Los Angeles Times featured 40 dental students from the Ostrow School of USC who recently ran a free clinic in Kenya. They collected dental supplies and equipment and raised about $175,000, which treated 200 Kenyans. They also handed out 15,000 toothbrushes and conducted education on oral hygiene. They are part of the USC Dental Humanitarian Outreach program, which has organized trips to Colombia and Honduras.
CNET featured a report by Jonathan Taplin of the USC Annenberg School and colleagues finding that Google and Yahoo, which have cultivated relationships with Hollywood, place many ads on Internet piracy sites. The story was also covered by Asian News International (India), Times of India (India), RT (Russia) and Billboard.
Forbes featured research by Victor Bennett of the USC Marshall School and colleagues finding that competition in the workplace may encourage unethical behavior. “Competition is generally thought to be good for economies because it keeps prices low and quality high. But when meeting customer demand is bad for society at large, then competition has a flip side,” Bennett said. The story was also covered by LA Weekly.
Financial Times (U.K.) ran an op-ed by Lawrence Harris of the USC Marshall School about high-frequency trading.
Vancouver Sun featured Midori Goto of the USC Thornton School, who is celebrating her 30th year of performing. She began performing in public at the age of six; she is now the head of the Thornton School’s strings program. She also is involved with outreach programs to bring music education to marginalized schools. “I have found it to be one of the very most exciting and inspiring aspects of my career,” she said.
