USC in the News 1/18/2013
PBS News’ “MediaShift” featured USC Annenberg School Dean Ernest J. Wilson III and future plans for the school. The story noted that the USC Annenberg School has its own global online news outlet, Neon Tommy, and will team with industry as part of its new master’s program that will put students into real-world work situations. “We are no longer observers,” Wilson said. “We are no longer uni-dimensional providers of skilled people. The Annenberg School for Journalism and Communication, like other journalism schools, we are now participants in the ecosystem of the creation and distribution of news and information.” The story noted that during Wilson’s tenure, the school has launched the USC Annenberg Innovation Lab and broken ground on the new Wallis Annenberg Hall.
The Chronicle of Higher Education covered a conference hosted by the USC Center for Enrollment Research, Policy and Practice. U.S. News & World Report quoted Jerome Lucido of the USC Rossier School about college admissions departments finding new ways to assess academic success. “We’ve ignored this realm because it was more difficult, less understood,” Lucido said. “Now we’re at a point where noncognitive measures can take their place alongside other things.” The conference was also covered by Insider Higher Ed.
The Washington Post highlighted a strategy by Edward Kleinbard of the USC Gould School on how to resolve the debt-ceiling crisis. Kleinbard has advocated the use of scrip — a kind of government-issued IOU. He has noted that the state of California employed this method in 2009 to pay individual and business claimants until cash was available.
CBS News’ “MoneyWatch” featured research by Scott Wiltermuth of the USC Marshall School and a colleague, finding that people with power tend to become more severe when they decide to punish someone. “That link between power and more severe punishment could cause a huge problem for managers,” Wiltermuth said. “What a manager sees as appropriate punishment could be seen as absolutely draconian by other people.” The study was also featured by L.A. Weekly and ScienceDaily.
CNN featured research by Dowell Myers of the USC Price School finding that California’s child population is declining. A drop in immigration means that native-born children are all the more important to the state’s future — and a majority of those children are Latino. The study suggests that spending on social services and education is necessary to ensure the success of this group.
Pacific Standard featured research by Feng Zhu of the USC Marshall School finding that a political slant within Wikipedia has lessened over the past decade. A search of politically charged keywords found that in 2002 Wikipedia of 2002 leaned Democratic, and that it is now less biased.
Yahoo! News featured research by Roseann Mulligan of the Ostrow School of USC on the connection between dental disease and school performance. Students with poor dental health tend to miss school more often, and those with toothaches were four times more likely to have lower grades than students without pain. “Dental disease always results in pain — and anyone in pain is less likely to perform well,” Mulligan said.
