Each year, USC programs and faculty research are highlighted in print, broadcast and online stories throughout the world. Highlights of recent news coverage are compiled by USC Media Relations.

KPCC-FM featured USC’s recruitment efforts, noting that that the university accepts students from all over the country and the globe. USC Dean of Admission Timothy Brunold said that 50.5 percent of applications for fall 2013 came from outside California. The story stated that USC sends recruiters to thousands of high schools in 48 states, and is the top university nationwide for foreign recruitment. Roughly 10,000 USC graduate and undergraduate students are from foreign countries, representing about 10 percent of the student body.

NBC News San Francisco affiliate KNTV-TV featured research by Dowell Myers of the USC Price School and colleagues finding a decline in California’s child population. Hispanic Business reported that after decades of worry about overpopulation, the slowdown of immigration has reversed the trend. “Kids are no longer overrunning us. Now they’re in short supply,” Myers said. The research was also covered by ABC News Buffalo, N.Y., affiliate WKBW-TV; NPR News Rochester, N.Y., affiliate WXXI-AM; and Times-Union.

Fox Business featured a study by Jonathan Taplin of the USC Annenberg School and colleagues finding that Google and Yahoo! — which have cultivated relationships with Hollywood — place many ads on Internet piracy sites. The research was also covered by Fox News Orlando, Fla., affiliate WOFL-TV.

Los Angeles Times quoted Dowell Myers of the USC Price School about projections indicating that Latinos will surpass whites as the largest California ethnic group in 2014. Myers was also quoted by Associated Press, Reuters, United Press International and ABC News Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV.

Los Angeles Times quoted Jeffrey Cole of the USC Annenberg School about “binge viewing” of TV shows.

Los Angeles Times quoted David Carter of the USC Marshall School about Gary Bettmann’s tenure as NHL commissioner.

NBC News Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV interviewed Melissa Durham of the USC School of Pharmacy about the effects of morphine on tooth decay.

KPCC-FM’s “AirTalk” interviewed Thomas Hollihan and Nancy Snow of the USC Annenberg School about rhetoric used in the gun control debate.

KPCC-FM interviewed Dina Mayzlin of the USC Marshall School about Super Bowl commercials.

KCET-TV’s “SoCal Connected” interviewed Thomas Hollihan of the USC Annenberg School about President Obama’s inaugural address.

The Chronicle of Higher Education included USC in rankings of the largest university endowments in 2012.

USA Today covered a viral video parody of “Les Miserables” co-written by USC graduate student Alberto Belli Crifo. The video was also covered by The Daily Beast and CW News Los Angeles affiliate KTLA-TV.

Los Angeles Times ran a photo of the grand opening and consecration for the Our Savior Church and USC Caruso Catholic Center.

MSNBC mentioned a USC study finding that immigration reform could benefit the U.S. economy.

E! News mentioned that the USC Trojan Marching Band will be included in Vanity Fair’s Hollywood portfolio.

Los Angeles Times mentioned a social media rewards program by Lodestone Social Media with universities including USC.
