Review

An artististic and literary efflorescence is occuring in cyberspace, as creativity rushes into the niches dilating in the emerging medium. Urban Desires demonstrates this point decisively. It is a Webzine based in New York that deals fiction and nonfiction and calls itself "an interactive magazine of metropolitan passions." Food, sex, tech, passion, even politics grace these often well-written pages, but let them tell it themselves, "From food to sex to tech to fashion to art to toys for girls and boys, we want to share it all with you. Because we are based in New York City, we have access to an endless pool of talent and one of the most exciting cities in the world." These articles really push the medium with their embedded sound files that comment with New York sardonics on the content described.

Examples of articles: the Patpong Sisters, one woman's exploration of the world of prostitution in Bangkok's Patpong district, Star Trek, multimedia CD-ROM, erotic tales, and the underground comic scene in New York.

The magazine is divided into nine sections: The Written Word, Art, Tech-Toys, Sex, Music, Performance, Food, Style, and Classified Ads. In the feature article section, "The Written Word", it's hard to tell how seriously some of these "features" should be taken. Everthing in this 'zine seems pervaded with warped humor and sexuality. The Art section is much the same, the pieces are interesting, quirky, dominated by comedy and sex. Technology and Toys deals with the latest cyberfads. The Sex section often contains the most intellectually respectable contributions, past contributions include an interview with Camille Paglia. The other sections present reviews and follow the same themes as those noted above. The Classifieds are what you might expect.
