The Internet is a unique communications and publication medium which is transforming the way we look at information. Librarians have long made use of the Internet and they bring many unique strengths to the search process. Among these are several thousand years of experience in organizing information and a person- rather than technology-centered approach to information needs. Librarians continue to integrate the Internet into existing information structures, but are frequently confronted with problems arising from the Internet's relative immaturity, including:
- The volatility of the medium (as opposed to print);
- The difficulty of locating useful resources; and, most of all,
- The lack of reliable selection aids.
The Infofilter Project was begun to provide librarians and others with timely and accurate reviews of Internet resources. Project participants
- Identify objective criteria for Internet resource review;
- Create and revise reviews of Internet resources;
- Participate in the editorial process for Internet resource reviews.
