University of Southern California The Power of Partnerships: USC and its Community

"In our surrounding neighborhoods and around the globe, USC provides public leadership and public service in such diverse fields as health care, economic development, social welfare, scientific research, public policy and the arts. We also serve the public interest by being the largest private employer in the city of Los Angeles, as well as the city's largest export industry in the private sector."

The Power of Partnership

For a century and a quarter USC has been a university in the city and of the city. Having grown, and grown up, with Los Angeles, USC draws its unique vigor from our surrounding communities. They're our pulse and lifeblood.

This has never been more true than now, when we have joined with our neighbors to ensure that our streets are safe, our children are healthy and well educated, and our local businesses, the arts, and our extraordinary cultural institutions thrive.

Ours is a powerful partnership. Consider, for example, the USC Kid Watch program, where 940 of our neighbors volunteer to watch over the more than 9,300 schoolchildren in our neighborhoods as they go to and from school. Or the Good Neighbors Campaign, where USC staff and faculty have devoted some $8 million from their own paychecks since 1994 to fund joint university-community projects to make our neighborhoods better. Or the thousands of USC students who volunteer each year in neighborhood schools and find themselves transformed by the parents, teachers, and children in these schools.

I invite you to browse this site, and discover for yourself the power of USC's partnerships with our neighboring communities.
